Have you ever felt out of place?
I went to the opening of new UBS offices in downtown Detroit. UBS is a financial service outfit. So when I think of financial services, I think staid, conservative, button-down, navy, black and grey. I think rule-following. To be clear, I know what the rules are and I occasionally follow them.
On this day, the thought of feeling out of place crept in when I showed up in this red checked skirt which was not opaque so you could see that I wore an orange petticoat underneath. I had on my black Detroit Snob tee-shirt with crystals forming the letters and my very colorful Suzani Turkish embroidered boots.
Suzani comes from the Persian word for "needle," and the word refers to embroidered hangings or fabric coverings. The birthplace of suzani is in what is now Uzbekistan, the area along the Silk Roads that interconnected the cultures of Europe, Turkey and China with the Muslim world.
The opening was an after work event so I saw the women in their AnnTaylor-like dresses or skirts with pumps and a nice non-descripted necklace. Of course, there is absolutely nothing wrong with this AT ALL. It is not what I would choose.
There are plenty of times when I second guess myself: Is this too much? What will people think? Yada. Yada. Yada. My first mind always wins out.
Granted, I do not work in that (financial) arena. I am hoping that one or two out there in these spaces move free and comfortably in what they wear and express in curious ways. And, I believe, she's about my age!
